I love this forum and have learned so much from so many. Thank you everyone. I don't have the opportunity to travel abroad often, only three times in the past 19 years. Because of this, I try to get the best bang for my buck and travel during "shoulder" season, B&B's, snacking/picnic, in order to take in the more expensive things that appeal to me without guilt. That said, there's a reason peak season is called peak season, and I find that I'd really like to go to the Edinburgh Tattoo and all that goes with it in Edinburgh during that time. A trip wouldn't be happening for awhile though, years from now perhaps. Any suggestions as to how to enjoy this time period of travel (outside of the cost of airfare)without going into debt for the rest of my life? Anybody have a rough idea of the savings of traveling shoulder vs peak time? Just a ratio or percentage estimate, I know everyone's vacation plans vary widely, thus cost varies as well. Something simple like "plan on triple the cost of shoulder season". Any thoughts or suggestions for making the Tattoo a reality for me would be appreciated. Planning these things is what keeps me sane!
The 2009 Tattoo is through Aug. 29. If I were you I would plan a trip that starts in Edinburgh where you catch the tail end of the festival--book your tattoo ticket early--and finish your trip into September. Here's the Tattoo link
http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk/tickets/index.html That last weekend of August is really the end of "holiday" time and I have found that September is marvelous in Scotland. Fewer people, but the sights are open and you can really enjoy yourself. I don't know a percentage, but I know that life is definitely different in Edinburgh during the festival. The hotels are more, sometimes even the restaurant prices go up. I know that during the festival I couldn't get an Arbroath smokie at Fishers. They just don't do them during the festival. My favorite Edinburgh hotel boosts their rates 10 pounds in the summer season.
