Oyster Travelcard

Hi, I have an Oyster card with a remaining cash balance from my last trip to London. My upcoming trip will be a week, so I'm planning on loading a 7 day travelcard for Zone 1. Can I have both a cash balance and a travelcard on the same Oyster? Will the system recognize which to use (travelcard in Zone 1, cash balance outside Zone 1)? Thanks for your help. Neil

7 day travelcard = £27.60 Pay as you go cap = £6.60 x 7 days = £46.20 That's a fairly substantial savings to me. Neil

You are assuming that you will hit the max on every day. If you are sure that you won't be going outside Zones 1 & 2, you will save if you travel a lot. I don't know how much you have on your oyster but that would reduce the savings. On the London Transport site they seem to issue a new card with the travel card for no extra fee. I may be wrong but there appears to be no reason to want to load a 7 day pass onto the oyster. You can have it with you in case you want to venture outside the central zone.

Yes, you can load both a seven-day travelcard and pay-as-you-go pounds on an Oystercard. You might as well load a zone 1-2 travelcard. It's the same price as one for zone 1. For each ride the Oyster computer will automatically use whatever is cheaper for you for the zones in which you will be traveling.

I'm wondering why you want the travel card? With an oyster card you will not pay more than you would for an all day pass. Unless you are flying around London, you probably won't even charge what the one day pass would cost. I agree that the 7 day travel card is slightly cheaper than 7 one day passes. You are then limited to the central zones. You've already got the oyster card with a remaining balance. Do you really think you'll save money with the 2 day travel card?

Yet again Tim beats me to it and says what I would have said. Many many people put Pay As You Go money on the same Oyster card as a smaller area Travelcard. It makes good sense.

We use the 7 day travel card on the Oyster Card, and I will load some cash on it so I can travel outside of Zone 2. The 7 day travelcard only works in Zones 1-2.

The earlier discussion seemed to debate the savings of the 7 Day travelcard vs Pay as you go on the OysterCard. In my experience, using the 7 day card 3 or more times a day easily makes it the better option, and in london, it is easy to use the tube or bus many more than that on a typical day. I do suggest taking the bus when practical over the tube, great cheap sifghtseeing.

I will be in London in 2 weeks and I did not get my child a photo id. So for a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 children ages 16, 14 and 10 would you recommend I just get 4 adult travel cards? Also, to get the 2 for 1 discounts do you need to print the discount coupons out before you leave?
