Oxford to Holyhead...what to do and see

My husband and I have about four days of unplanned vacation time between our trips to London and Dublin. We are catching the ferry in Holyhead and was wondering what anyone recommends for us to see between London and Holyhead. We only know we want to go to Oxford, but after that we are completely open. Oh, and our trip is in April.

A more useful answer can be given if you give us some idea of what you have seen already on previous trips (if any).

Thank you.
Landing at Holyhead, northern Wales immediately suggests itself as your first stop from Holyhead.

And then, after northern Wales, on a straight line from northern Wales to London would be The Cotswolds, then Oxford, then London.

That will nicely take up your 4 days, and it's all on a direct line from Holyhead to London, so you avoid eating up parts of your limited time zig-zagging back and forth, when it's not necessary.

Thanks! Do you know where I can look to find out if there are any festivals or anything of that nature going on in that area in April? The countryside is gorgeous and a sight in itself I'm sure, but we were wondering what we could actually do/see while on our drive through and I'm afraid I have just hit a wall in my research!!

Going to Ireland, I stopped overnight in Chester on my way from the Cotswalds. If traveling by train, as I was, stop a couple of nights in Moreton-in-Marsh then procede to Chester. Chester is like a smaller York-like western England city; it even has Roman remains and some great old buildings. As I recall I was able to take a train from there directly to Holyhead and the ferry. From Moreton it is possible to take the bus to other towns in the Cotswalds or Stratford-upon-Avon.

For FESTIVALS and other events in Chester, or any other town/city, go to their website using Google. In this case I entered "Chester UK" and got the official website for Chester. There was lots of tourist info there, including festivals. It may be too early to find the schedule for 2010. You could phone the Tourist Info desk and ask.

If you use this route planner it will give you some idea of the towns/villages along the way to North Wales from Oxford. Maybe have a look at the non motorway route which will take you through the England/Wales border country.
