My husband and I will be in England/Scotland Sept. 30 through October 7 and we will be meeting a friend in Oxford for lunch one day. I know Oxford has amazing universities and architecture but we will only be there part of the day so any suggestions on some things not to miss? Thanks.
There are walking tours that hit the main highlights. Around 11am and 2pm I believe.
I believe Rick also has good coverage in his Britain guidebook for a day tour of Oxford. It's probably in the London guide as well if you have that instead.
Hi Starla, if your friend is from Oxford then he/she no doubt knows lots of interesting places to eat. If not I would suggest the "White Horse" pub. Located in the City Center it is the smallest pub in the region. Better than "Pub Grub" and a terfic atmosphere - clean loo's. "Christ Church" is the College to see if you only have a short time. Approx 600 students attend. Most of the other 37 Colleges have 500 students. St Johns' college is interesting because you can walk all the way from St. Johns' in Oxford to Cambridge all on land owned by St Johns'. A small town, Oxford is nice to visit. Enjoy your day!
If you want a really interesting place to visit, I would suggest the linked University Museum (natural history) and Pitt-Rivers Museum (anthropology). As well as the collections both are in quite spectacular Victorian buildings. A word of warning: please remember that Oxford colleges are working educational institutions and not tourist attractions: do not disturb people trying to work and don't expect to just walk into all of them!
Thanks so much for the suggestions. I hadn't really thought of actually touring the colleges as I'm sure the students and faculty would be disturbed but I would like to see the bits that wouldn't intrude. Your suggestion for a pub lunch sounds like just the ticket. I'm sure we will have a wonderful time no matter what we see or do because I will be in England once again.
