I am planning a trip to Edinburgh in Mid-October and would like an opportunity to visit some of the areas outside the city. I am looking for an itinerary that includes some of the beautiful landscape Scotland is famous for. Any suggestions?
A train ride to Aviemore or Inverness is great! Aviemore is a small village in the Caringorm Moutains. It has lots of hiking, a funicular up The Caringorm with great views, a cute rail station, a micro brewery and other activites. You can get to some of the whiskey distilleries from there easily.
Inverness is my absolute favorite place in Scotland. LOTS to do and see. Day trips to Isle of Skye and Ellen Donnan Castle, the battlefield, Orkney, boat trips up river and Loch Ness or on the Murray forth to dolphin watch! Great shopping, Wonderful food... I could go on and on.
If you are into walking.... Train to Corrour station, theres a hostel there but even better a bnb by the station. You could return after walking over to Glen Nevis, there are well trod paths to follow. This way you would walk below the highest mountain, longest waterslide, Steall waterfall and gorge.
