overnight stop in Edinburgh

I'll have time just for a late afternoon, evening, and morning stop in Edinburgh while in Scotland mainly on business (in March). Please recommend a B & B (or similar lodging), centrally located, for one person--I see that many charge for whatever no. of beds there are in the room, so can be costly for a solo traveler. I also welcome suggestions of a good restaurant (Indian, general vegetarian, east Asian...).

Yes, in Europe, they charge by the number of people in the room. If you stay in a room that is meant for 2--a double bed-you pay more. There are lots of good B&B's and small hotels in Edinburgh. You need to think about what area you want to stay in. Since your time is short, you might want to look for something on the Royal Mile or in New Town. Other areas are a little further away, but I really do mean "a little." For example, I've stayed many times at the Inverleith Hotel near the Botanic Gardens. It's about ten minutes further than the hotels in New Town. ; ) Edinburgh is not a big city and you can get around very easily on public transportation.

What price range are you looking for? That might help with the recommendations.

Hi Marcia,

I stayed at the Dene Guest House in the New Town area, http://www.deneguesthouse.com/. I had a tiny room, standard (meaning shared baths), for about 30 pounds a night when I visited in April a couple of years ago. Breakfast was good and the location is great for getting several different bus routes.

I think there's a Travelodge just off the Royal Mile. If you could grab one of their specials, that would put you closer to the museums and sights for a short visit, though New Town really is not far, mostly just up and down once over (Edinburgh has a lot of up and downs).

Cheers.
