Oslo vs Bergen

Hi everyone,

I am planning 5 days in Norway during my upcoming Scandinavia trip. I am going to use one of those days on the Norway in a Nutshell trip from Oslo to Bergen. How would you advise using the other 4 days? 2 days each in Oslo and Bergen, or 3 days Oslo 1 day Bergen?

Thanks!
Brian

Hi Brian. I felt miserable at Bergen, caused by the dark clouds covering the sky. The water at the harbour looked unpleasantly sullen. Bergen has dark clouds most days. Bergen has rain most days. If you insist on travelling from Oslo to Bergen in one day, I recommend being at Oslo 3 days. (in one of the days at Oslo, a person could do a day trip from Oslo). I liked the Norwegian people at Bergen. And I liked the Norwegian people at Oslo. ("Norwegian" people are northern European people who are citizens of, and residents at Norway, their culture is Nordic.)

One whole day in Bergen is plenty to see the essentials including a quick trip down to Troldhaugen if you're a Greig fan. You could spend a month within a twenty-five mile radius, however, and never be bored.

Three days will only scratch the surface at Oslo. Unless Roskilde, Denmark, is already on your agenda, scoot out onto the Bygdoy peninsula to see the viking ship museum.

In my opinion, Bergen is the nicer of the two, but there is more to do in Oslo, so I'd split it -- two days in each.

Bergen is utterly charming and very scenic. I loved the old German Hanseatic League (sp?) buildings and the fish market at the pier. It's a wonderful place to wander around.

Oslo is my least favorite Scandinavian capital. It kind of left me cold. It's not that anything is wrong with it; it just didn't have anything that wowed me. Maybe my expectations were too high. I did really like the Viking ships, though.
