I'm going to Oslo in a month, and I've already planned on doing a day on the museum island of Bygdoy, Norwegian Folk Museum, Viking ship museum (I think these are on Bygdoy?), maybe Kon-Tiki museum and the Norsk Folkemuseum (Norwegian Museum of Cultural History). Well, maybe not all of these, but they're on my maybe list. Any other suggestions?? Thanks!
Definitely do the Viking ship museum. It is excellent.
Froggner Park is where everyone goes to relax and commune with the 100's of playful sculptures by Gustav Vigland. Go to a corner store and they will sell these aluminum tins with charcoal to use as mini-barbeques. with some meat and veggies you will be a true Osloan, Osloite, whatever. A great way to spend 4 hours on a spring day and wonderful photo-ops.
We got the Oslo card back in 2001, and visited most of those sites in a day included in the card, as was the water taxi which took us almost directly to all of them. It was pretty darned awesome. If you're going to hit Kon-Tiki, check out the Fram museum too. It was worth it.
The Norsk Folkemuseum was amazing and one of my best memories.
Do not miss Frogner Park and the Viking Ship Museum (much better than the one in Roskilde, IMO). I also enjoyed City Hall and the National Gallery. Many of the sites are worth a visit but do not take a lot of time.
For the record, the Viking Ship Museum is not on an island, it is on a peninsula. You can get to it by bus or by boat.
A little to the north of Oslo (easy train ride) is the Olympic Stadium. It's fun if you are an Olympic junkie or winter sports enthusiast. The Viking ship museum was my favorite, though.
Thanks everyone!! I wasn't too sure about a couple things but with your recommendations I think I'll have a very busy trip!
