I've heard that central Oslo may not be the safest area to stay in a hotel. Do you know of any areas to avoid? Also if I stay further west, is the public transportation safe and efficient?

Lizzie, We were in Oslo last month and stayed at the Scandic Byporten Hotel, which is in the mall above the main train station. we never had any problems. we walked directly out of the station the start the RS walking tour. The metro is also in the same building so it was very convenient. Good luck

Oslo didn't strike me as dangerous in any way. I can't imagine the worst of Oslo measuring up to any American city.
