Oslo/Bergen-how much time?

I'm flying into Oslo early on a Thursday, and don't fly out until evening on Tuesday. How should I do Bergen also? I don't just want to take the train there and sleep back, but how long should I plan on staying there-is a day enough? Any tips on what to see in either place appreciated, altho I do have Rick's book. Thanks!

I'm assuming you want to do the Norway in a Nutshell between Oslo and Bergen? You can see all the sites in Oslo in about two day, Bergen deserves just one full day. If you don't want to take the train back to Oslo, there are cheap flight available between the two cities. Rick's Scandinavia guidebook has all the details.

I personally found Oslo to be a one or two day city. More to the one day side. That being said if I was on a limited schedule I would always take another day in the Fjords over another in Oslo. Bergen I think is a one day experience too.

Just some names to consider seeing:

Munch Museum
Nobel Prize Museum
Olympic Ski Jump - Highlight for Us
Bryggen (Old Hanseatic League Headquarters) in Bergen.

That being said I felt like near were really "sight" places in the way someone would say lets go to The Leaning Tower. More sort of places where you just be and absorb what is going on around you.

Hello Elaine. I travelled in NORWAY in 2007. I recommend : Thursday (the day you fly in to Oslo) be a tourist in Oslo. Friday ride in trains and boat to Aurland at the Aurland Fjord, (part of the "Norway in a Nutshell" Fjord trip. Check in to the Aabelheim Pension at Aurland. Saturday travel from Aurland, on boat and bus and train to Bergen (continuation of the "Norway in a Nutshell" trip). Check in to a hotel or B & B in Bergen. Sunday, stay in Bergen or vicinity. Monday fly from Bergen to Oslo. You might be able to do more sightseeing in Oslo on Tuesday. (There is a variety of prices for the airline tickets, depending on what airline, and the departure time).
Some of the airlines in Norway are SAS, Norwegian Airlines (www.norwegian.no). The book "Rick Steves' SCANDINAVIA" has all the information that you need.

Take Ron's advice and spend more time viewing the fjords and reduce your time in Oslo. Not much there of interest to me.

If you like nature you will want to tour the cliffs. The Nutshell tour is worth your time and money. I would split whatever time you have between touring Bergen and touring the fjords.

I agree with the comments about Oslo. There are a few really neat things to see -- I especially liked the museum with the Viking ships -- but the city seemed kind of blah compared to Bergen and Stockholm. I loved Bergen -- we spend one day which was enough to see all the highlights, though I would have enjoyed another day. However, I agree that you can't go wrong with the fjords -- they are fabulous. We took a tour similar to Norway in a Nutshell and stayed overnight in Balestrand. We stayed at an old victorian place right on the water. It was slightly shabby, but wonderful, with views to die for.
