I've done quite a bit of searching since I last asked about this topic. Following the advice of several of you, I plan to spend two nights in Kirkwall. I want to see some things in Kirkwall (such as the Cathedral) as well as ancient sites like Scara Brae. I will arrive the first week in June, using public transportation. I don't have flexibility as to dates and on the best date for me to book a tour from Kirkwall, Orkney Aspects is already booked. I also looked into Wild About Orkney, but since I am the first to inquire and they require at least two for the tour, I would have to pay a non-refundable single supplement equal to another fare for one person, even if more people book later on. I asked to be put on a waiting list there. The John O' Groats Ferry has a long day tour from Inverness which will cover the sites of interest to me. The same company also offers a 'Short Break Tour' as well which includes transportation to and from Inverness, two nights hotel in Kirkwall and a tour while there for about 200 Pounds. I haven't been able to download the specifics on the places visited on that tour yet- the site may be updating. I would probably take the John O' Groats Inverness to Kirwall bus anyway, even if I go with Wild About Orkney. Has anyone had any experience with these options?
(Please don't fuss about the amount of time I'll be spending on the bus- I really enjoy riding 'coaches' and trains in Britain, even for long trips- it is one of the reasons I love going there.)
