Hello, Love this site! I've spent a few days lurking while planning a trip to the UK for with my mom this spring. We were thinking of flying into London in early May and spending a week there, with a few day trips, and then taking the train to York, and then to Edinburgh and spending a few days in Edinburgh before flying back to the states. I just checked prices for airfare, and one way tickets from Edinburgh to Dulles are around $900, higher than roundtrip from London to Dulles. Has anyone had a good experience doing open jaw from Edinburgh? I also checked Glasgow prices, but they are also steep. It seems like our best option in terms of cost might be to take the train back to London, even though it would take some time. We're looking at airfare costs (for both of us) of around $1700 roundtrip from Dulles to London but $2800 if we fly into London and out of Edinburgh. Am I missing something or is it just that expensive to fly out of Edinburgh? For that cost, we'd rather take the train back but I want to be sure I'm not missing something. Thank you for any advice!
Sarah
You didn't give your travel dates, but I did an arbitrary search on Expedia using 2 dates next March, and it came up with a best price of $844 for an open-jaw round-trip ticket. Dulles to London on Delta with one stop in New York, return Edinburgh to Dulles on Air France, one stop in Paris. Don't shop for one-way tickets. Do your search as a "multi-city" search. Combining one-way tickets is way more expensive.
Check British Air; they are far better than any US airlines. I checked BA Dulles to Heathrow on May 9 and return May 21 Edinburgh to Dulles at a cost for two of $1768. I think you can fly for a similar price from BWI. I don't know where you are in DC and which airport is most accessible to you. BA has a BWI flight using 767s which has 2X3X2 seating. I find that a very comfortable flight and since I prefer an aisle seat, it eliminates any pressure to book seating in advance at an additional cost.
Thanks. Will try that.
Open jaws is not one-way out and one-way back. It is using the "multi-city" or similar named option when choosing flights, and should be very similar in price to a regular round trip to one of the cities.
Thanks, all. Just tried that and got flights around $900 per person for our dates. Not sure why that didn't occur to me! Will play around some more - hoping to book in the next week or so.
Sarah, I really like the daytime flight on United out of Dulles. It leaves about 9:30am and gets into London about 10pm. I'm usually in my hotel by 11:30pm and get a good night's sleep. I can't sleep on planes and I much prefer this flight to the overnight flight. When I take an overnight flight, I spend most of the first day feeling bad from lack of sleep. However, I suspect that BA might have better options if you fly home from Edinburgh. I've taken both BA and United on the Dulles - LHR route and don't find much difference in service. BA provides free alcoholic drinks and United charges. United lets you reserve a seat in advance at no charge; BA charges a fee for advance seat reservation.
Sarah, There are a couple of different options you could explore. Here's a few thoughts...... > Are there budget flights or easy Bus trips from your area to Toronto? If so you could have a look at Air Transat to see if one of their flights will work for you. They offer flights to London Gatwick, Glasgow and Manchester, so there might be some savings possible with open-jaw flights. They sometimes don't offer flights every day, so you may have to be "flexible" with your departure and return dates (within a range of a few days). > In the same situation, I'd have a look at return flights from Dulles to Manchester. If you arrive there, it's about 3 hours by train to London. On the return trip, it's about 4 hours from Edinburgh to Manchester Airport. You could travel in a "loop" from Manchester > London > Edinburgh > Manchester (perhaps with a stop in York). Good luck with your planning!
Virgin Atlantic will be serving Edinburgh in the near future, check them out as well.
