Everything I read says how easy it is to book online at www.sj.se. I am finding it impossible. I even had MasterCard working on it for a hour to get SJ to accept my credit card online. Anyone know what the problem is with their website? Any suggestions? Trying to get from Stockholm to Oslo in July.

I did get the phone # and will try it. I am beginning to think the problem is that SJ won't accept American credit cards. No problem at all with Norwegian Rail.
I did mine by phone. Very easy, good English. Credit card worked fine.

I had a similar problem trying to buy a ferry ticket online for Sweden. Just as you suspect, American cards don't work because of security features used by the Swedes. Not sure of the details why, and your card will work in person there, just not online.
Don't forget to have your card's pin code with you or have your card issuer give you a pin code. Scandinavia uses pin codes, not signatures.
