If you want to see the even a little of the highlands, you will want to add a few days. As it is you really only have 1/2 to 3/4 of a day. That won't even let you see most of Inverness. Can you stretch your time a bit. Even adding only 2 days would give you a good taste of the highlands.

That helps a lot. I should be able to add 2 days. Thanks!

If your priority is the highlands, why spend two nights in St. Andrews? Either do it as a day trip or skip it. I thought St Andrews was a nice day trip from Edinburgh, but on a seven day trip, I would pass. Of course, neither my husband nor I are the least bit interested in golf.

Glad to hear you can add some time. Inverness makes a great base to see the highlands. You can do several excellent day, and 1/2 day trips from there. The tourist information office is excellent. If you can add another day or two, I'd spend at least one night in Aviemore- in the Caringorm Mts. Ideally, you'd want 2 days in Aviemore, 3-5 in Inverness. But having at least a few full days in Inverness will let you get a feel for Scotland. Oh- and both Inverness and Aviemore are easy to reach by train from Edinburgh (I'm not sure about St. Andrews).

Kristine - I agree with Carroll, make St Andrew's a day trip from Edinburgh, that would give you 3 extra days in the highlands. Same day return is £15.60. You take the train to the Leuchars station and then catch a bus into town. As a side note round trip train from Edinburgh - Inverness can be as little as £21.85. You can look at train info at: www.eastcoast.co.uk **** oops, Thanks Toni. boy am I embarassed.

@ Joel and Carroll- the OP is going to a wedding in St. Andrews- that's why she's spending the time there.

I guess it would help to read the original post more carefully. Thanks, Toni.

Thanks so much for your replies. Based on your input, I'm trying to extend our trip. Waited on the phone w/BAirways for half an hour today, but still didn't find out what I needed to re. cost. I'll try again tomorrow and hope to spend at least 10 days in Scotland.
