One night in London to see a show

If you were going to be in London for one night only to see a play, where would you stay? Where do you think is the most convenient area? We will arrive by train and will have a small bag each. We're looking for reasonably priced (I know that is relative) hotel/B&B that is clean, comfortable, and with ensuite, but luxury isn't necessary. Any recommendations? Also do you have a recommendation for pre-show dinner? Thanks! edit to add: We prefer to stay in quieter areas, so I suppose that eliminates the area immediately around the theatres.

Which theatre? It will make a difference on reccomendations. I'd try to stay either 1) near the theatre and near a tube stop or 2) at Paddington or Victoria (depending on airport of departure). What time is your flight out the next day?
Many restaurants near theatres offer very good pre-theatre menus. So again, the particular theatre makes a difference.

The hotels in the West End are some of the most expensive in the city:( But cheaper neighborhoods are a quick Tube ride away. Check out some of the hotels near St Pancras/Kings Cross/Euston Stations. The hotels clustered around Earls Court are affordable as well. Check out this chain: http://www.premierinn.com

Thanks for the replies. The theatre is the Victoria Palace. We aren't flying out the next day; we are taking the train to Cambridge. The timing is somewhat flexible at this point.

D.D. - The Luna Simone Hotel(www.lunasimonehotel.com) is in the Victoria station area and gets good reviews. It is also about a 10-15 minute walk to the Victoria Palace Theatre. As a side note. King's Cross station is about a 10 minute tube ride from Victoria station on the Victoria Line.

We have stayed many times at the Victoria Thistle (now called The Grosvenor). It is right inside Victoria Station and only a short walk from the Victoria Palace Theatre. Not a b&b- but very nice hotel and often has good deals (part of the UK's Thistle chain). It is a very traditional Victorian station hotel on the outside and in the lobby. There is a pub/resturant across the street from the station called The Shakespear. It has good pies (think shepherds pie, chicken and ham, etc.), good fish and chips and even does a decent steak. There is also an Italian place nearby (I think the name was The Spagetti House- not certain now) that is superb. Several other pubs in the immediate area also.

Vancouver Studio Apartments in Bayswater. Nicely priced, clean, two tube stops to chose from, diverse area with a variety of restaurant and pub options. Pleasant and helpful staff.

It has been several years, but I've stayed at the Lime Tree near Victoria station. It would meet your requirements. It was a nice hotel and is in a great location for getting around. It was far enough from the station that it was quiet, but close enough to walk with bags. There were several nice restaurants nearby. Good luck.
