My girlfriend and I are traveling from London to Edinburgh by bus and we have a couple days to kill on the way. Does anyone have any suggestions for places/landmarks to see on our way up?
(Also tips on using the bus system in Britain would be helpful too!)
York is one of my favorite cities in England -- lots of history, a fabulous cathedral, neat medieval streets. You see the influence of the Vikings, Anglo Saxons, Normans and even Romans.
Sorry, I don't know anything about the buses. I went by train.
I have to second York! It is a great stopover between London and Edinburgh. We also used trains so I can't touch the bus issue. You might also consider Durham. I have read some good things about it.
I would recommend York as the others have and also Durham which has a beautiful Cathedral and university grounds and the Almshouse serves great food at cheap prices...packed with locals. You could also stop to see Hadrian's Wall, Raby Castle, Lumley Castle in County Durham is a hotel with beautiful grounds and Newcastle-upon-Tyne is also on your way. Be sure to check opening days and times on all locations.
Can't help you with the bus as we've always used the train but have a great trip!
While I don't disagree with either of these suggestions--both are great, but you might want to check the web for the times you are traveling and see if there are any special festivals at either Durham or York, but also check Newcastle on Tyne. I've not been there, but I think I read recently somewhere that it was having a bit of a revival. Maybe somebody else knows more. Pam
