old travel books on Scotland

I'm researching the history of Scottish hotels and I'm trying to find out what guide books would have been most commonly used in the late 1960s - early 1970s in the U.S. for travelers to Scotland. Or what travel magazines would have been most read in the U.S. at that time.

I apologize for posting a research question to a travel advice site, but I figured that this is probably the best group of people to ask!

Thanks!

If you were a member of the AA (Automobile Association) in th e60s and70s you were issued every year with a guide which included a road map of of the UK and information on hotels, guesthouses and B/Bs in most cities and towns in the UK. I think you might be able to buy them on Ebay or Amazon. Hope this is helpful.

Not that I was traveling during that time period, but I would think Baedeker and Berlitz would have been popular guides. I could be seriously off base, however!

The books that were very popular in the 1960's were called "Europe on Five dollars a Day.' As prices went up in Europe, "Europe on five and ten dollars a day" were the ones (about 1970). I still look at them and its fun to compare prices. They were printed by Fodor"s and for a long time were almost the only up to date travel books available.

Europe on $5 a Day (upped to $10 a Day in 1972) by Arthur Frommer.

Wow. $5 a day in Europe. Nowadays that'll get you a value meal at McDonalds.

Thanks, everyone! I've already got some leads on tracking down the sources you've listed!
