Old Town accommodations in Edinburgh

We are visiting Edinburgh in November. My son is studying abroad at the university and will be living in a flat in Old Town East just east of South Bridge Street. We'd like to be within walking distance of his flat. Hotel reviews are discouraging and people seem to love B & B's instead, but they seem to be more remotely located. Can anyone recommend places (hotels/B & B's/apts.) to stay in Old Town Thanks for any advice you can offer.

You could ask your son to look around the area and send you the names of some places that look possible.

Monica , We spent four days in Edinburgh in october 2010 and stayed in the holiday inn express on cowgate just several blocks from south bridge st . A very easy walk . the hotel was new in 2008 and two years later when we were there it was absolutely pristine , clean , fresh and lovely . Although it is only one block from the mile it is next to a church and is a wonderfully quiet neighborhood . As you walk west on cowgate toward south bridge st. keep your eyes to the left for the cow going through one of the buildings . Enjoy Edinburgh . it's absolutely terrific !

There is a University near the Common Wealth Swimming Pool. If this is where your son is - any of the B&B's off Dalkeith Road will work for you. We stayed at Kenvie Guest House which is a 5-10 minute walk from the Common Wealth Pool. Very clean, comfy - not fancy. Dalkeith is a long road. If you want to be near the Common Wealth Swimming Pool area, I would contact the B&B directly and check-out the map of B&B. There are quite a few B&B's in this neighborhood. Kilmaurs Road is popular street for them. (i.e. Dorstan, Ar-Na-Said, priestville, ceilidh-house, etc.)

A carefully chosen hotel in New Town might be just as close o your son's flat as a hotel on the other end of Old Town. Google Maps are probably your friend here.

We visited Edinburgh, including the University of Edinburgh, several months ago. We stayed at a B&B in New Town; it was a bit of a walk over to the Uni, but not too far (for us). It was a great place to stay, and we're hoping our son ends up at Uni there, and we'll get to stay at the B&B again. It's called No. 53 Frederick Street. The owners were delightful and helpful, and the room wonderfully large. Breakfast is served at a restaurant next store, and was very tasty.
