I'm going to be in Scotland from September 22 to October 9. To Orkney and the Highlands first, then Iona and Edinburgh the final days. I'm packing for wet weather (gortex jacket, quickdry pants, hat, gloves, wool scarf) but now wondering if I shouldn't throw in a fleece vest and longjohns in case it's cold. I'll be spending lots of time outside. What would be "normal" for this time of year (knowing predicting weather is a fool's folly!). Thanks for any help.
Doris, You're from Spokane. Have you ever come to Seattle during your planned months? If you have, pack like you're coming here.
For September and October the temperature is usually anywhere from low 50's to low 60's. Like you said predicting weather is fool's folly. Have a great trip.
Greetings
For the Orkneys and Highlands, it could easily be in the 40s or even 30s, especially with wind chill. Remember that the Orkneys are very far north, and very exposed. It's already quite chilly here in Edinburgh - summer has gone early!
You tend to work up a sweat walking around, so best to dress in layers and avoid items that won't "breath". Long johns might be good both under pants and at night. Fleece is great - I've been wearing a fleece vest most days this month.
Have fun!
Kate
