Does the National Trust for Scotland offer short-term (14-day) visitor passes for their castles and grand houses--the kind of passes you must buy in the US before you leave home? Their website explains only how to join for an annual fee.
I was in Scotland several years ago and purchased the Historic Scotland Explorer Pass http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/explorer. I don't know if it covers all of the NTS sites but I do remember it allowing us to skip the lines at Edinburgh Castle :) I believe we were also able to use it at Dunfermline Castle & Abbey, Stirling Castle, and Urquhart Castle. I don't believe it included Eileen Donan though. I can't seem to find a list of all of the sites where it's accepted but I remember getting one when I purchased my pass. I'm sure if you emailed them they could send you one.
Thanks Mandi, I'll check their website.
You can buy the pass in Scotland. I just talked to someone about it today at a TI today in Stirling.
Thank you! That's grand news.
The Great British Heritage Pass may be the answer as it covers NT sites and more, see below from their site
"Properties are either in independent ownership, state-owned, or belong to/are members of The National Trust, The National Trust for Scotland, English Heritage, Cadw (Welsh Historic Monuments), Historic Scotland, Treasure Houses of England, Historic Houses Association or Historic Royal Palaces."
Thank you one and all. Linda, I will check the website you suggested.
Historic Scotland is not the same as the National Trust for Scotland. Here's the website for NTS http://www.nts.org.uk/. It's a charitable organization. Historic Scotland is a government agency. http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/ Here's their website. The latter has strong educational focus as well as preservation. Pam
