Norway questions

We are planning our 3-week Scandinavia trip for next May-June. Our plan for Norway at this point is to stay a couple of nights in Oslo then take the Norway in a Nutshell trip to Bergen where we will catch a Hurtigruten cruise up to Tromso and then catch a flight to Stockholm from there.

I have a couple of questions:

1) We plan on staying the night somewhere along the Norway in a Nutshell path before we get to Bergen. Any suggestions on what city to stay in?

2) How many days should we plan to stay in Tromso? I currently have 2 nights penciled in .

Stay in Balestrand at the Balestrand Hotel. We were just there this June. You cannot find better hosts in this beautiful town than Unni-Marie and her husband Eric. It is family run, clean and comfy, with beautiful fjord views and a wonderful breakfast spread. They will even meet you at the boat dock and take your luggage to the hotel.

Best place to eat? The Viking wagon. Excellent fish and chips.

The big Kvikne hotel is popular, but not worth the extra money you will pay. Lot of tour groups there, too, which always seems to spoil the atmosphere for me.

Was in Tromso last year. One full day is enough in my opinion. Nice little town, interesting history - a departure point for many explorers and last stop for the Tirpitz which was blown up in WWII near there.

Responding to question 1): I agree with the recommendation to stay in Balestrand at the Balestrand Hotel; the express boat goes directly there from Flam. We spent part of a day going to Vik by ferry to see the stave church.
