Is is more scenic/better value to do the sognefjord starting at Bergen and returning to Bergen or do the Norway in a nutshell, which is the train and a small part of the fjord?

I loved both - but if your time is limited - the nutshell is the way to go to get a bit of the best of all of it. If you have time and come back from bergen via the sognfjord - its another nice trip! Stay a day or two in Balestrand as well for a relaxed local day trip outpost (The Balestrand Hotel is the best - friendly and homey!)

Appreciate all the comments, thanks. Am I right that the individual segments -- train, bus, boat can be bought separately if we decide to stay overnight in Aurlund, for example?

Problem is, the train you take on the main line requires reservations, and is usually sold out weeks in advance- even in the off-season. The nutshell website allows you to purchase the package with various overnight options.
