I would like to do the Norway in a Nutshell tour and also visit the sognefjord portion. I am flying into Oslo. Any suggestions for if this is possible with a eurail pass, and how to go about pre-booking the sections now which may not be covered on the Eurail.
I have not been able to find detailed step by step information on how to accomplish this.
Thanks!
We did exactly that in 2007. My memory of it is a bit hazy. I think we called a Eurail number in the USA, told them we had a rail pass and asked for seat reservations. We must have given them a credit card number over the phone to cover the seat reservation costs. Then they sent them in the mail (I'm sure there was a healthy "postage and handling" charge too). Then when we were on the train having our tickets checked, we had our passes in one folder and the seat reservations (which looked just like regular train tickets) in another folder & handed them both to the checker.
That's what I recall, anyway.
The rest of the "tour" doesn't need to be reserved. The boat, bus and cog train run frequently and rarely sell out. We went during the heart of tourist season and it was a snap. You can reserve a spot on the boat by calling Norway (I think the number was provided in the RS book). We did, but it proved unnecessary. There was room to spare on the boat.
Thanks for the tip. In your opinion is it worth the hassle of booking the separate portions of the trip to take advantag of having the eurail pass, or just to book all legs of the trip on one of the norway in a nutshell trip. Aprox. how much does it really save.
I've been researching this for a long time, and it just seems like since I will be visiting in Late June during busy season, waiting to book at the train station is not a reliable option.
Thanks again!
