Hi: We'll have kids (under 7 yrs old) traveling with us when we make the Scandinavia trip in Summer, but I wanted to know if it makes sense to do the "Norway In A Nutshell" trip ourselves by car or take the tour (train/boat/bus combination)? Of course, the convenience of the kids is a priority as well (that's the only way the adults can enjoy the trip), but I want to know if there are any downsides (from viewing the scenery perspective) if we travelled in our own car. Thanks,
D
I have not traveled in the fjords by car, so perhaps I am not the best person to respond. But I cannot imagine that it could compare to seeing the fjords by boat. We took our two kids, but they were 11 and 15. I would think young children would enjoy the boat as well. Same with the train.
"Norway in a Nutshell" is a train trip that involves the unusual Flam train which zigzags up a mountain from a fjord. To get there you either take a boat from Bergen (in summer) or the regular train from Oslo or Bergen. Once there you can stay overnight and there are options to rent a car to drive around. I did this several years ago to see the wonderful stave churches, etc. but that extra sightseeing would intereste young children at all. The train might be interesting but it's a long day. If you will be in Bergen I would highly recommend the Floibanen Funicular for children. The Bergen website will have other suggestions: http://www.visitbergen.com/en/WHAT-TO-DO/All-activities/
You can drive to Flam, park the car, then take the train up and down, take a trip by boat on the fjords. Thus, you do not have to take the Oslo-Bergen train to see the Myrdal-Flam and boat sections. The train ran through some scenic (glacier) area near Myrdal, but I think you can find great views "up top" by car as well.
