Norway in a Nutshell - Oslo to Myrdal

Hi everyone,

For those of you who have done the NiN tour -- is the Oslo to Myrdal segment worth it? I've heard that portion is very boring.

Would I be better off launching the NiN from Bergen and finishing in Bergen, seeing the scenic sights in that area?

Thanks!
Brian

There is some nice scenery between Oslo and Myrdal, but I was pretty disappointed in it. We spent a lot of time going through tunnels and scenery that wasn't that great. If you need to get to Oslo, it's a decent way to get there. But if you're only doing it for the scenery, I would skip it.

Bergen to Bergen is the easy way to do it. Takes most of the day, but you still have time left over before supper and Bergen itself, as well as the surrounding area, is really great.

For me the Oslo to Myrdal segment was the highlight of the tour. A good chunk of it goes above the tree line, and you get to see this amazing rocky moon-like landscape. It's something I've never seen anywhere else in the world.

The real question is how are you going to get from Oslo to Bergen without it? Doing the NiN RT from Bergen is only a little shorter. You don't want to skip Oslo. And it makes little sense to FLY from Oslo to Bergen and then turn around and do the NiN from Bergen.

So I don't really see the point in trying to omit it. We thought the "lunar" landscape portion was very interesting, but the rest was ordinary. Remember, the real NiN experience is Oslo, Bergen, and in, out , and through the fjord. The train is mostly just the means of transport between these three points. Any scenery from the train is just a bonus.

I agree with Randy. The real question is are you planning to visit both Oslo and Bergen. If you are, then you might as well take the Norway in a Nutshell between the two.

If you are only planning to visit Bergen, then take just the Bergen circuit.
