The direct train from Oslo to Bergen R/T is NOK 199. The Norway in a Nutshell is R/T is NOK 2,240. While it is longer, is it worth spend 10X more?
The nutshell tour includes a mountain train, and a boat ride through the fjords; so it's very scenic. The direct train is just an inter-city train which goes through some scenic mountain terrain. IMO the Nutshell package is worth the extra money: http://youtu.be/kRv7fYl5zn8 http://www.norwaynutshell.com Another option is to stay overnight in Bergen, spend the day there and fly back to Oslo, cheap fares are available.
I would suspect that the 199 NOK would be a minipris EACH WAY pricing and would be 398 NOK return (round trip). The minipris is the NSB equivalent of an advanced purchase, no refund ticket with the minipris pricing being of limited availability. As previous respondent notes, the Nutshell tour is really a combination of modes of transportation and not just a point to point journey.
I could not talk my relatives into spending the extra money. Your right, the NOK 199 is one way. The Norway in a Nutshell people suggested taking the Oslo Bergen one way using Nutshell, and the return trip buy the 199 ticket. I thought that was a good suggestion since the return trip is nothing special. We were able to get 5 tickets at the 199 prices, and the other 3 tickets at 299 (4 people x both directions = 8 tickets). Does anyone know if we need to reserve seating, or if that is possible? Thanks.
If you purchased your tickets through the NSB.NO website, I believe that you should have gotten coach and seat assignments if available. Some of the regional trains are open seating.
