Norway Fjords

We are going to Bergen mid September and are renting a car for 3 days to see primarily the fjords including Sognefjord. Any recommendations on a 3 day circle trip. Also any thoughts on reasonable accommodations in Bergen (if possible). Thanks in advance.

Alan, While in Bergen last summer we stayed in a hotel one of the few during our 6 weeks abroad, when hostels and camps were more our style. Norway is expensive, but we got a deal because many hotels used for conferences during the fall and spring are empty during the summer. We stayed at the Clarion Collection Havnekontoret, right on the water, and it provided a full buffet breakfast, PLUS pancakes in the afternoon, AND a "light" (but very filling) dinner! We saved so much money not having to buy food or eat out, that it was more affordable than staying at a backpackers hostel (we were a family of 4). Plus it is a beautifully renovated historic building with a tower you can climb for a 360 degree view of the harbor. On the Fjords the hotel situation is pretty dismal. Overpriced, very little choice. If you can do the Fjords as a round-trip in one day from Bergen, that's probably the best for your budget. If you haven't already rented a car, you won't need one if all you want to see are the Fjords! You can take a boat up the fjord, the train back, or vise-versa. Or do the boat both ways and see the Fjords at two different times of day. Have a great trip!
