Hi there, after the Norway in a nutshell,we will be in Bergen and still have 2 full days in Norway.I would love to do the Geiranger fjord cruise, but on the third day we have to be back to oslo to cath a plane in the afternoon to paris. My question is :Should we go to alesund by plane or express boat?I believe the best option is to go to alesund and then geiranger,do you agree?
It would be tough to add in the Geirangerfjord in a span of two days. Taking a bus there takes something like 10 hours. You could fly to Ålesund (we did the reverse), but then you have a couple of hours by bus to get to Hellysylt(sp?) to catch the boat to Geiranger and then you have to get to Andalsnes (another hour away by the exciting Trollsteigen road) to be able to catch a train back to Oslo (or get yourself back to Ålesund to fly) It makes me tired just thinking about it. You might consider doing the Geirangerfjord only, as we thought it was more impressive than the one in the "nutshell". Or you might just spend a couple of sleepy days in/near Bergen. There is a city bus to a nice stave church on the edge of town + a tour of the Bryggen area and a couple of other things to do. Then again, Ålesund is a very pleasant small city, too... Many people extend the nutshell route by staying overnight (or 2 nights) in Balestrand, along the fjord.
The best way is to take the Hurtigruten from Bergen overnight to Alesund and on into Geiranger Fjord the next afternoon. Spend the night in Alesund, then fly to Oslo the following day. Hurtigruten is comfortable; Geiranger is spectacular. Alesund is an interesting town, too.
