Norway Drive Times/Fjords

Arriving in Hirtshals at 12:30pm with car. Planning to go to Bergen and then on Fjord country....do we a) Go the inland route (maybe skip Bergen and head directly to Fjords) b) Drive the costal route through Stavanger to Bergen, spend night and head to Fjords following day. c) Drive to Stavanger, spend night, drive to Bergen spend night and then head to Balestrand next day.

We are planning on spending two nights in Balestrand (enough??) and then a night in Solvorn before heading to Jotunheimen Mountains. Does it make sense to split time between Balestrand and Solvorn?

We are in no particular hurry, but want to make the most of our 16 days in Scandanavia.

Hello Pete,
We drove around fjord country in June, 2005---here's our itinerary which worked well: flew into Bergen, rented car and drove to Voss (Fleischer's Hotel)for 2 nights, enjoyed a day trip south east around a fjord and down towards an area called Vorringfossen. The next day, we drove north and east, did a round trip on the Flam railroad, visited Vik stave church, and then spent two nights in Balestrand at Kvikne's Hotel (in retrospect, one night there would have been enough--there isn't much to do there). Next day, we drove north over the glaciers to Geiranger for 2 nights (Grand Fjord Hotel). The day we were in Geiranger, we rode the ferry down the fjord which is lined with beautiful waterfalls. We wanted to go to Alesund, but ran out of time. After Geiranger, we drove back to Bergen for one night (Admiral Clairon Hotel has a few rooms that have views of the Bryggen. One night in Bergen was plenty---we walked around the Bryggen and took the funicular up the mountain. Flew to Cornwall the next day. Driving in Norway is really easy---they use tunnels a lot. the web site theaa.com is good for distances. Hope this helps.
