If you had only two days to spend in and around Donegal (and maybe including Derry, too) where would you go and what would you see? We're already covering the southwest and the Northern Ireland coast, in mid-July. "We" includes husband, 10 y/o son,8 y/o daughter and me. Thanks in advance everyone!
Thanks, Dan! This is helpful. We will try to get out to see Slieve League when we're in Donegal. The photos of it I just searched online are amazing!
There is a beautiful area on the coast known as Slieve League. A bit tricky to find but worth the effort. Gorgeous views of the coast, lots of areas for easy hiking. When you get there, there's a gate across the road to keep the sheep in. Just open the gate, drive through and close behind you. Then a short drive up to the top of the hill and take in the views. Have fun!
If you have the time, I'm sure you'd enjoy a visit to Glenveagh National Park, and a tour of Glenveagh Castle which is located within the park. It epitomizes the wild beauty of northwest Ireland.
We spent five days in Donegal last April. Stay near Donegal town - lots of restaurants and shops. The most scenic peninsulas were the southwest one, including a drive to the Slieve League cliffs (Ardara also had several excellent knit shops) and the northern one farthest to the east. Some of the other northern peninsulas were full of crowded together developments of holiday cottages..... I would advise against trying to do the Giant's Causeway from a base in Donegal town - it was a very long drive.
