Northern England - 20 Dec - 2 Jan

I am flying to Newcastle and would like to visit the Dales on my way to Edinburgh for Christmas. I am scared to drive in large cities but would like to see historical sites and walk around the countryside in the North of England. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. What villages would be good to spend the night in along the way?

You might want to catch the tar barrelling at Allenheads. Alston is a nice little town in the north pennines. Hawes in the Dales I can recomend.Lots of good touring from there. Kelso in the borders is a very pretty larger town.
