Hi! We will be staying near Portsmouth and would like to travel over to view the Normandy Beaches and WW2 landmarks. I'm having some trouble finding what is the best route. Ideally we would like to ferry overnight, sightsee all day and ferry back. We are already paying for hotel so we don't want to double pay for one night if possible. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!! :D
Brittany Ferries run between Portsmouth and Caen. (The port actually is at Ouistreham.) There is an overnight ferry. Are you planning to take an all-day guided tour out of Bayeux? If so, the tour will end too late for you to catch the last daytime ferry from Caen to Portsmouth. If you rent a car, you could take the last daytime ferry; but be aware that there are fewer sailings on Wednesdays.
You will likely need to spend an overnight in France to accomplish what you want to do. It's a full day on the D Day beaches and staying one night won't kill your budget. You could stay in Bayeux, view the famous tapestry there and the museums and then return by ferry to the UK having spent a two day adventure with no stress.
