Just wondering if there's anywhere you might suggest for a late afternoon/early evening 'jaunt' from York by train. A favorite pub, perhaps? Not looking for any heavy duty sightseeing, but getting a wee flavor for local living.....
Try Scarborough on the coast. About 40 minutes from York. A lovely walk along the coast, both in town and just to the south. Great fish and chips along the north beach. David
We stayed in a B&B out near Castle Howard and took the bus into York for our visits. However, I don't think this bus takes you to Castle Howard. Reportedly, there is a bus that departs from the York train station each morning that does go to Castle Howard. It's about 20 miles NE of York. For a slightly different experience, you can take the train to Thirsk, a small village that was the home of James Herriot, the author of All Creatures Great and Small. He was a real-life veterinary surgeion there. There is a museum there. The train ride takes about 30 minutes depending on which run you are on.
