My friends and I are going to Dublin for New Year's. Where do you suggest we go to celebrate it? We are in our late 20's. Also, we have a hotel booked for 5 days, where outside of Dublin could we go for a day trip.
Anna,
I'm not sure if Dublin does anything special for New Year's, but the typical party destination would be Temple Bar.
As for day trips, what are you looking for? If you're into ancient history and ruins, then Newgrange is a fantastic place to visit. You could also head south to the Wicklow Mountains for great scenery.
We, too, will be in Dublin over New Year's, and we've learned about the Lord Mayor's New Year's Day Parade on 1 Jan that sounds like a lot of fun! Also, Christchurch Cathedral has a countdown with fireworks on the lawn. Also, U2 played a concert in Dublin last NYE. We're actually awaiting word about who will perform this year, probably at the 02 venue, but no word, yet. Have a great trip!
You might find enough to do in Dublin for five days. We did. You can go to the Tourist Information Center (a very helpful place) and book a day tour outside the city. We wanted to go to Newgrange but ran out of time. Highly suggest you take the Hop On Hop Off bus tour and be sure to use the red buses with the real guide, not yellow or green buses. The Temple Bar area is the place to go for night life. All the major fun stuff is south of the River Liffey. Enjoy! Dublin is a great city.
