Netherlands and Brussels at Christmas

We are looking at traveling this year (12/21/2011 - 12/31/2011) to the Netherlands and Brussels. From Rick's book, it looks like the weather may be dreary and gray. Has anyone done a trip to these countries during this time of year? Can you tell us what kind of weather to expect and whether most places will be open over these holiday dates? Thank you.

You did notice the news this year about the European weather over Christmas, I assume. Nobody "expected" that. Or it could be just gray and dreary with rain showers.

Most of Europe is dreary and gray during the winter but don't let that stop you. There is so much to do in both locations and most places will be open. Europe is magical at Christmas so enjoy and dress warmly!

I would expect it to be cold and damp. Anything less than that would be a bonus. We were in Germany and Czech Republic over this past Christmas, and it was cold and damp and nearly constant overcast. Very little sun. Reminded me a lot of Breckenridge at the same time of year. Maybe not as cold but the humidity made it feel cold. Now, we prepared for it with long underwear, ski gloves, fleece, etc. so we were comfortable for five or six hours at time in the weather. Daylight was short -- sun up around 8 to 9 and set around 4. I would expect the Netherlands being further to have shorter daylight hours and equally cold. Amsterdam is about the same latitude as Calgary. Dress accordingly and you will be fine.
