Need suggestions for 6 days in Scotland.

We arrive in to Edinburgh on Sept 4th for 2 nights, picking up our car on the the 6th. But my friend is running in the Glasgow Marathon on the 6th, so we don't leave Glasgow until mid day. We have to be back into Edinburgh on the 12th to return the car, and fly out on the 13th.

I would like to leave Glasgow and head toward the Fort William or Oban area for the night, but is it possible to do with just a half day to drive out of Glasgow? Then from there on over to Skye for 2 nights. Up to the Inverness area for 2 nights. Then 1 night on the way back down to Edinburgh.

Wow! Wrote out like that, that isn't alot of time. cry Is this doable? Suggestions?

Why bother with a car? You can use the train and do this! Parking and driving in both Edinburgh and Glasgow (and Inverness, too) are nightmares. Gas is REALLY expensive and parking is too.

Sure, you can drive up there in a half day. The trick will be to monitor your stops for picture taking and exploration. The only place you'll likley have traffic is driving up the west side of Loch Lomond. Via Michelin says it will take two and half hours. I would pad that at least a half hour and maybe more like an hour and a half if you are new to driving in the UK and want to stop a lot for pix. The Via Michelin site is www.viamichelin.co.uk The rest of the tour looks doable to me. You won't need a night on the way back down to Edinburgh unless you have a place in mind or want to see a bit of Perthshire. There's beautiful countryside near Pictlochry and south to Dunkeld. Dunkeld or Aberfeldy might be good stopping places after driving a slow, wee roads route south from Inverness. Pam

In reading old threads, I have found the mappy website and I'm loving it!! Mappy is saying it's about a 3 hour drive, which would give us plenty of time to drive and explore the rest of the afternoon.

The last time I did this route, it was by bus and there was so many places I wanted to stop and explore.
