Does anyone know of a good genuine castle hotel in Scotland. It could
be in Edinburgh or Inverness. My wife and I want to celebrate our anniversary at a castle but unlike Ireland, Scottish castle hotels look old, dingy and mostly fake. Anyone have recommendations?
My favorite hotel in Scotland is the Caringorm Hotel in Aviemore- no it's not really a castle- just looks like a miniture one on the outside. They have a wonderful resturant, too. If you really want a castle, find some back issues of "In Britian" magazine. They did an article a year or two (or three?) ago about castles in the UK that are now hotels and even one that is a hostle. In Inverness we like to stay at the Royal Highland. It is a nice hotel, attached to the rail station. In Edinbrugh we stay at the Royal British- across Princes St. from the Waverly station. At least they sound "royal" and castle-ish.
I stayed at Stonefield Castle near Tarbert west of Glasgow. I found it very nice. It was American plan. Have you explored the castle hotel sites? http://www.celticcastles.com/ Also, explore this site. http://www.scotland-inverness.co.uk/Chatelaine/accomm.htm I think that you should easily be able to find something that is the opposite of old, dingy and fake.

I stayed at Borthwick Castle (about 15 miles from the Edinburgh Airport) for my birthday in 2002. It offers a multiple course dinner (and additional fee) and a tour of the castle after dinner. If you can, request the Mary Queen of Scots room.

Enjoy your trip!
Check out Castle Stuart near Inverness - www.castlestuart.com. It ranks #2 on Tripadvisor for a castle stay and gets my vote as well. (As I recall #1 is outside the UK)
