My husband and I found cheap tickets for London for Nov. 17 - Nov. 30 this year. We've been there before but only for a few days. My husband wants to go to Paris for a couple days but I don't really want to go, not this trip anyhow but was thinking of maybe traveling around to Wales, or even Scotland or some other areas in England (the countryside). We don't want to drive but will be taking the train if we do this. Does anyone have any ideas of some places that they enjoyed there and what type of itinerary would you recommend if you had 12 full days to spend there. We are open to some suggestions. I just want to know what other more experienced travelers would recommend. I did get Rick Steve's London book, Great Britian book and Paris book. We are definitely on a budget but have a little room to splurge if necessary. One thing I must do though is go to the theater in London...we would like to spend a few days in London to do some things we didn't get to do when we were there before. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!
Where to go and what to see is very subjective. I once thought I could happily end my days in York and then I visited Dorset. Go to Carries' post and read Richards answer. If I had 12 days and was fairly new to travel in the UK it's an itinerary I'd be tempted to follow. Now if I had 12 days on the ground, I'd go to Nottingham to see Mr. Straws then tour Norfolk and Suffolk. Back in London I'd visit the Kensal Green Cemetery and go again to the Cabinet War Rooms for the Churchill exhibit. Day trip's would enclude Dover, because I've never been to the WWII tunnel in the White Cliffs, Bletchley Park, and Chartwell. Gosh I am boring.
This is an awesome time to go. For many years we went to the UK for the last week in Nov. Christmas markets will be just starting during the last part of your trip. Edinburgh has a good one; Bath has one of the best; cardiff Wales usaully has a small but very good one with local craftsmen;York's is good and London has an ok one some years. I'd suggest something like this: London 3-5 days with day trips to some of these: Windsor, Cardiff, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Canturbury, Oxford or Cambridge. Theatre in London is MARVELOUS. Then train to York- 1 to 3 days. Train to Edinburgh. How long you stay there depends- stay for 3 or 4 days or just 1 and do a very quick visit to Innverness for 2 or 3 days also. Train back to London for 1 night before flying home. You could also choose to just stay in London and do LOTS of day trips- we have also done that and really enjoyed the time. York is about the outside distance that you can do as a day trip. PM me for more ideas.
