Need help with apartment locations in Edinburgh

I have found two possible apartment to let in Edinburgh for our 2 night stay. Can anyone help me with the pros and cons of the two locations? #1 - James Square Apartments Location is described as: This beautiful fourth floor apartment is set in a unique luxurious development, which includes a private swimming pool, and is located to the west of Edinburgh city centre and only 10 minutes walk from Princes Street. In looking at the map, I would say it is just off Dairy Road, off the Caledonian Crescent. #2 - Allanfield Apartmnet Location is described as: Located in a quiet residential estate off, and near to, the top of Leith Walk. In looking at the map, I would say it is near the intersection of Brunswick and Allanfield. We will be doing the usual touristy things. Coming in by train. Leaving by rental car. Have to consider that my elderly, although quite mobile, father is traveling with us.
Thanks!

I've not stayed in either of these areas exactly. The first apartment off dairy road is to the west of the Castle. According to Google Maps it is a 20 minute walk to the castle. I think you will walk sometimes, but also use buses so ask about them. I The Allanfield is to the east and north a bit and is 35 minutes to the Castle, but you walk past tourist sites on your way to the Castle. Again I suspect, you'll do a mix of bus and walk. Personally, I think that I would pick Allanfield, but I'm not sure that my preference is anything other than my greater familiarity with the NewTown area over the western part of Edinburgh. i like the restaurants that are in the New Town area. I stayed once at B&B on Royal Terrace and I found it quite convenient. My sister and I stayed years ago on Murrayfield Road. We were in our 20's, but the walk did get long. Maybe someone will an alternative perspective. Pam

Amy, we just returned from a trip to Scotland a week ago. We were in Edinburgh 5 nights and stayed at Six Brunton Place, which is actually on London Rd, at the eastern end of Hillside Crescent. Your second location appears to be just north of where we stayed. It is very walkable to everything. When you come into town, you might want to take a bus or cab. If you arrive by rail or air and take the bus into Waverley Station, there is a bus office just south of the station at the corner of Waverley Bridge and Market St. They can tell you what bus lines go near your location. Easter Rd to the south onto Abbeyhill Rd. takes you right to Palace of Holyroodhouse. London Rd. is very nice, all stone buildings very reminiscent of Bath. I don't know Allenfield. Easter Rd. dips a bit in class, but is still equal to Dalkeith Rd. recommended by Rick Steves. Your first location appears to be about the same distance west of town as the second is east of town. There is a rail station, Edinburgh Haymarket that is very close. When I was looking for rail tickets it showed up, but I don't know whether the trains you will be using stop there or not. If so, it would be very convenient for rail service. The west side along West Coates/Haymarket Terrace is nice, although I don't know the exact area of the apartment. In general, I would say that you would have more of a feel of "the city" closer on the east side than the west side.

No, I haven't booked yet. I checked the one that your link brought me to and it is booked for the two nights that we need (July 25 & 26). How do I find the other two to check availability for them?
Thanks!
