Need advice on what to bring for Oslo/Stockholm/Amsterdam in Oct.

Hello,

I am leaving this Sunday Aug 9 for a 2.5 month trip around Europe. I was just looking at the average monthly temperatures for the cities mentioned in the topic and need some advice on what kind of coat I will need. MSN said that for Stockholm the avg. high is 50 and avg low is 42; Oslo avg. high is 48 and avg. low is 40; and Amsterdam avg. high is 58 and avg low is 47. Has anyone been to these cities in Oct? So far I have a North Face fleece and was going to bring a knit hat, a scarf, and some light gloves. I'm guess I should bring something heavier. Any recommendations for me? Thanks!

Heather, I was in Stockholm last October (1st week) and the temperatures were similar to what you quote. I wore a fleece (North Face) with a long sleeved T-shirt under it every day and was comfortable. I did not need a hat, scarf or gloves. With the hat, scarf and gloves, I would think you would be fine if it gets a little cooler while you are there. In the event it would get significantly colder, I would suggest just adding a layer -- you could throw on another T-shirt or buy a sweatshirt. I would not bring anything heavier; you don't want to be lugging something around for a couple months in the off chance you will get cold at the end of your trip. In fact, if your jacket has a hood, you could skip the hat, and if it has pockets, you could skip the gloves. I would only bring the scarf if it is light weight.

Have a great trip! Stockholm is fabulous. I was less enthusiastic about Oslo, but there are some great sites there.

Though average temperatures are a good guide, remember that Stockholm can have a cold wave and snow in October (rare). But I wouldn't carry a heavy coat along just in case. When I was there and got cold, I just went to a store and bought another layer to put on. Layers of clothes are warm, and easy to peel off if you get TOO warm. For October, I'd go assuming a jacket will be enough, and pick up a little something extra only if I had to.

While it is unlikely to snow, I'd be prepared for rain. A raincoat with a zip out lining or fleece underneath can work well. I particularly like a raincoat with a hood. October can be a bit gray and dreary in Sweden (it gets dark early) ... it can also be lovely.

I forgot to mention that I had a waterproof Northface jacket with a hood that I wore over my fleece. It was perfect.
