Near British Museum

We are going to be in London in early December and are looking for a place near the Russell Square tube station or the British Museum. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Kath

HI
I stayed at the Astor Museum Inn Hostel. It was basic and fairly inexpensive. It was right across the street from the british museum. This hostel was in a wonderful location and very convenient.

Here are two recommendations from the Lonely Planet London guidebook:

The Arran House Hotel (www.arranhotel-london.com) is a B&B that has standard rooms and dorm-type rooms at hostel-like prices. Everyone gets the full English breakfast.

The Arofsa Hotel (www.arosfalondon.com) B&B has standard rooms that are a bit cheaper.

There is relevant info under "Sticker Shock in London" (to the North). Lodging between King's Cross and the British Museum is mentioned there.

I have a dated suggestion that might be of value. In June of 2003 I was in London for a few days. I stayed at the Penn Club 21-23 Bedford Place. The street is the next block over from the British Museum. Bedford Place runs into Russell Square. The Penn Club is 45 room B&B. They served a good breakfast. The website is www.pennclub.co.uk/club . The Club is four floors with out elevators. I stayed in the budget single which costs L 53 now, the double is now L 86 , My accomodations were spartan but clean. It is also a short walk from Euston, King's Cross, and St Pancras stations. On the web site they mention choosing not to have TV's in the rooms. They are Quaker affliated. I would love to get back to London, so in August I was scanning B&B lists via Google and could not the Penn Club. I had to google the it directly to find it. I hope you enjoy your trip.

We've stayed at the Jenkins Hotel several times, and quite enjoy their hospitality and comfort. It was featured in a Poireau Agatha Christie movie series many years ago. It's small (21 (?) rooms), but clean, no lift, and very comfortable. Close to the tube, train, restaurants, etc.

i've stayed in a number of B&Bs between russell square and holborn (another tube stop less than 1/3 mile walk), and while none of them could be confused with the waldorf, most are warm and friendly, and had vacancies available off-season. i found two of them by simply walking through the front door and asking for availability (once in december, once in january)..

Look at Cartwright Gardens [Google search will turn it up } , there are about 6 hotels all in a row. A great fish and chips place and a good Indian restaurant are just across the street and grocery stores and other small restaurants are on Marchmont street. British Museum and Russell Square Tube are all right there.

Our favorite hotel, Harrington Hotel, is in Cartwight gardens. Loved the Indian and seafood place. Good pub on the corner. Harringtons is a small family run hotel.

Have fun
