We'll be in the UK and Ireland this August. Our 19 day route will take us to Edinburgh, the highlands, Dublin, and Wales. We'd like to hear from someone with experience using their I-phone 4-S to navigate. We've checked with our carrier, Verizon, and can get set up on a plan to give us phone service throughout the UK and Ireland. I've also looked at some handheld GPS options but if the phone works its one less device we have to pack. We've also loaded a number of Rick Steves guides which we've enjoyed wandering through a number of museums and other sites.
Thanks
Be very sure that you understand the charges for data usage, which is what you will be doing using navigation. Data roaming charges can be astronomical, and you want to be very sure that Verizon's international plan covers that (I suspect that it does not).
We just returned from the UK (London and Belfast) and Ireland. We had our verizon iphone 4S's unlocked before we left and bought international SIM cards in Uk and Ireland. We used the company called 3. They have unlimited data if you top off the SIMs with 20 pounds or 20 Euros. We made the mistake of buying a Vodaphone Sim when we got to Ireland thinking they should all be the same and spent 3 times that for data for only 3 days. The SIMs from 3 with unlimited data are good for a month. The downside to Ireland is that the cell coverage is spotty. I would advise a non cell based related map app (we used GPS Nav2) that downloads the apps when you have wireless or internet and learn how it works before you hop in the car! We used a kindle version of Rick's guidebooks which worked well when I figured out the bookmarks! Hope this helps!
