Hello. My husband and I are renting a cottage near Cahors in the midi-pyrenees region. We will be flying into Toulouse, staying the night there, renting a car , and driving to our destination. Any suggestions on things to do while we are in that region? We are going to be there March 8-17th. Thanks!
The area is a treasure trove of pre-history. Peche Merle, as I recall, is about a 20 minute drive from Cahors. You can visit St.-Cirq-Lapopie, a charming medieval village, on the same jaunt. Nearer to Sarlat is Font de Gaume at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, where there is also a museum of prehistory. You can reserve tours to both of these sites, but in March I don't think it necessary. I would check to see the opening times and when there is an English tour, however. Sarlat, itself can be done as a longish day trip from Cahors; and it's well worth a visit. Roman ruins, medieval villages, wineries . . . I could go on and on. It's one of my favorite parts of France. I suggest instead that you buy the Cadogan guide "Dordogne & the Lot." It's extremely detailed. We've also found their restaurant recommendations to be very reliable. Cahors, btw, has a very good TI office.
