Just an FYI. As romantic as I am about the Caledonian Sleeper it costs $$ and if going from London to Edinburgh will wake you up 90 minutes early to get you to transfer to a seat as the train splits to Glasgow. An alternative is the Megabus Gold sleeper which is considerably cheaper. Leaves from Victoria Coach station at 11pm and rolls into Edinburgh at 7pm. Get individual bed and conveniences. My family booked this for July and I will give a report afterwards.
Well we did ride it for the London-Edinburgh run (1130 pm depart arrive 700 am) and were a bit underwhelmed. On the plus side the buses were new, air-conditioned, had clean sheets, and got you there on schedule. On the negative side you had to get into your "cot" as soon as you boarded and as your luggage was stored in the hold you pretty much wore what you had on. There is no way to change--the one bathroom is too small. The bottom bunks had little vertical clearance--the top ones seemed better--so there was no way to sit up. There were curtains on the outer windows but none on the inside so you had little privacy. You were given a small pillow and a clean, if short blanket. The buses are double deckers and our beds were in the upper back. I found the oscillations a bit nauseating but was OK once I turned around. I accidently turned on the "call attendant" light but he never came up once all night. I got 4-5 hours sleep so I suppose that was better than if I sat up in a bus all night. My teenage boys did manage to get a lot more sleep--they said they enjoyed the motion. It was a lot cheaper than the sleeper train 120 GDP vs 400 for the supplement but if I had to do it again I think I would just opt for a hotel and spend the 4-1/2 hours on the train during the day.
Thanks for the report, John.
My son was disappointed that there was no sleepmask, toothbrush, or Onesie offered as in the recent newspaper article.
Hi, Any chance you'd be willing to re-post this in our Trip Reports section. ;) Cheers,

I was planning to write up a report. There is a lot of stuff to process we did 17 days.
