I see that Megabus has a train I can take from London to Portsmouth. Looks like it s 1 pound each. Is this a good option, or should I go some other way? Looks like it takes about 1.5 hours.
I appreciate any information you can offer. Thanks.
It's probably a good option- but be aware that you can only travel on the train specified on your ticket. They're really strict about it.
Megabus train tickets are for regular South West Trains. The standard anytime 2nd class fare for London-Portsmouth is £31.80 so Megabus can be a really good deal. There is an allotted number of tickets at each price level (starting at £1.00). When those are gone, the price goes up to the next level, etc. Your ticket is for a specific departure date and time. You also can take a National Express coach from London Victoria to Portsmouth. The ride takes 1hr45min. The cheapest advance fare is £4.00.
I agree with Tim. Megabus trains are great value as they're just a cheap way of buying a seat on a regular service. Sometimes you have to sit in a specific carriage, but that makes no difference to your journey. I'd avoid Megabus buses, though. They're usually not very comfortable, unless you're lucky enough to get a modern one, and they tend to be packed full.
