Manchester to Liverpool

We are spending a week in manchester as my husband is attending a conference. Any suggestions on what to see in Manchester? While he is working I want to go to Liverpool. I heard you can catch a boat? Any comments about the mystical tour?

Will you know any other attendees at the conference? They might have group outings you can join in on. The Wharf in Liverpool has many exhibits, including the Beatles, etc. Manchester is actually near a lot of interesting places such as the walled town of Chester. Depending on the time of year there are antique and flea markets. There are boat rides on the old canals.
I'm not aquainted with one from Manchester to Liverpool but maybe. It isn't that hard to drive there...renting a car with a couple of friends would be the best way to get around. The National Trust UK has several interesting estates, etc to visit. I would reccomend a visit to the Potteries area for a visit to the Wedgwood factory and other outlet shops in that area. You are also just south of the Lake District. It is very touristy...but still beautiful...they have boat rides on Lake Windermere.

If you like nineteenth century art, try the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and the Lever Gallery in Port Sunlight which is a short train ride away.

Port Sunlight is really cool...it was one of the first planned communities for the working class.

There are regular trains from Manchester Airport to Lime Street station in Liverpool. From Lime Street station, you can either walk or take a taxi/bus to the Prince Albert Docks where you can visit the Beatles Museum. I've taken the Magical Mystery Tour (book your tickets just near the Beatles Museum) and it is okay, not great. They take you to all the famous places in the Beatles songs (Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, etc.) and also show you the outside of the houses where Paul, John, George and Ringo lived. The tour ends near the Cavern Club (this is not the original but a replica) where the Beatles got their start. If you want to go inside John Lennon's house, I believe that you have to make arrangements way ahead of time. If you are a hard core Beatles fan, then I think that it might be worth a trip. Penn
