Manchester to Ireland

My husband has a conference in Manchester then we want to go to Ireland for 10 days. What is the best way to get there?
We will then fly back to Oz from Manchester. Do we/can we hire a car in Manchester & take it to Ireland or do we hire one in Ireland? We are not going to Northern Ireland. We like to base our selves in one place and do day trips

mary, The easiest and quickest method would be to fly from Manchester to Dublin. whichbudget.com indicates that both RyanAir and Air Lingus offer flights on that route. If you decide to travel via RyanAir be sure to pack light! They're quite restrictive with baggage limits, and if you're over the limit, YOU'LL PAY! If you're planning on driving around Ireland, rent a car in Dublin. If you want to tour Dublin for a few days, rent a car when you're ready to leave, and then return it to the airport prior to your flight back to Manchester. Happy travels!

Another option, if you want to tour the west coast, is to fly Manchester to Knock. Pick up a hired car there and look at basing your stay in Mayo or Galway?
