Manchester Day Trips

My wife and I will be in Manchester, UK and were wondering about day trips. We are already planning trips to both Liverpool and York to see the sights, but I was thinkng more of going down the "unbeaten path". I really love medieval history, so anything to do with that would be great. If anyone knows of any such place or places, I would love to hear from you. One more point, we would have to travel there by train or bus. Thanks again!

I have not been personally but I have been told Cheshire is nice. North Wales is also to the west with all the Castles. Don't know how good the connections are by train though.

Halton Castle ruins in Runcorn. It is from 1066 and still shows burn marks from a norman takeover in the 1200s.
