Planning our first London trip. What do you think of Madame Toussauds and London Tomb with a 12 year old boy? I live in Los Angeles and we have a Madame Toussauds here but have never gone. Is it crazy to travel to London to see something I can see here or is this the original? Wondering if should spend precious valuable time on this or just "suck it up" for the kid. Would appreciate your thoughts?
Not sure what the Tomb is, but Toussands is one of those places you gotta visit once in your life. It's expensive, but very fun. I've been to a few of the MTs in other cities like Amsterdam, NYC, and Hong Kong, but the one in London is the biggest and best of the bunch. Lines can get very long to get into the place, so purchase tickets in advance via their website and you can walk right in.
The London Tomb is a tour of all the horrific legends of London....Jack the Ripper etc. RS says it is a waste of time but just ran into a friend who took her kids and said it was a highlight for them.
Although situated in London, these are not really "London" attractions, they could just as easily be in Hoboken. Skip the London Madame Tussauds and let the kid go the LA one sometime.
http://www.thelondonbridgeexperience.com/ is the Tomb's website. Note that London Bridge is not the iconic fake Gothic Tower Bridge. It is not even as interesting as the London Bridge in Arizona. If the kid likes haunted houses and wants to go, drop him off, adjourn to the Market Porter pub, and pick him up at an appointed time. Let us know if you find the attraction scary or totally lame. Reviews are very mixed.
I completely disagree. Madame Toussauds is one of the most popular attractions in London. For many visitors it is synonymous with London. Quite an achievement considering how expensive it is. While there are branches in other cities. I doubt it's a top ten attraction in LA, NYC, or Amsterdam like it is in London.
Madame T's is horribly expensive for what you get, but your 12 yo will love it!
I have to agree with Elaine about Madame Toussauds. Plus however Chimp describes Tower Bridge, The Tower Bridge Tour is still impressive and it offers some great views as well. For Tacky Terror have you considered the London Dungeon??
So Chip, why is Tower Bridge fake?? I'm sure that there are thousands of people who like the Tower Bridge. Do you even like the UK? it doesn't sound like it.
I should have described Tower Bridge as neo-Gothic instead of fake Gothic. I love Tower Bridge and brought it into the discussion just to point out that it is not where the London Tomb is located. I thought that the London Bridge Experience was designed to lure in American tourists who did not know the difference between Tower Bridge (and the Tower Bridge Exhibition) and London Bridge (and the London Bridge Experience). My advice to let the kid go by himself stunk, children must be accompanied by an adult.
OMG! I just read my reply to Lisa's post. Sorry Chip.
