luggage storage in York and Durham

My wife and I are taking the train from Cheltenhem to Edinburgh, and would like to take a few hours to walk around York and Durham. But what to do with our luggage? Any suggestions on short-term luggage storage?

According to the National Rail site, the York station has left luggage facilities, but the Durham station doesn't. However, to make those stopovers, you'll have to buy expensive anytime single tickets that will allow you to get off and on along the way between Cheltenham Spa and Edinburgh Waverley.

In terms of tickets you could mix and match - advance Cheltenham to York, and either an off-peak single from York to Edinburgh or two singles York-Durham and Durham to Edinburgh, possibly advances. Depending on the load factor and hence cost of specific trains, this may not turn out to be much more than taking an advance for the full route. Without a left-luggage facility in Durham, this could be an overnight stop using this strategy, if your time permits.
